Elevated Tank, Booster Station and Water Distribution

Elevated Water TankNorthville Township has awarded contracts for water distribution system improvements to create a new pressure district for an area in the township currently experiencing low water pressure. This area is generally bounded to the south by 5 Mile Road, to the east by Sheldon Road, to the north approximately 1/2 mile north of Six Mile Road, and to the west by approximately 1/2 mile west of Beck Road. In order to create the new pressure district, a new elevated water tank, a booster station and water main distribution system improvements will be constructed.

The purpose of the new pressure district is to alleviate low water pressures experienced by existing residents and to be proactive in dealing with future pressure issues as new users are added to the existing water system. This will also ensure adequate future fire flows are available in high demand situations, such as during the summer months when irrigation demand/use is added to the system.

The new pressure district will be supplied with water from the City of Detroit stored in the new elevated water tank.  The tank will be constructed by the Chicago Bridge and Iron Company at a cost of $1.7 million and have a capacity of storing one million gallons of water. The tank will be located within the Community Park, near the future Water and Sewer Maintenance Building. The tank will be filled by the new booster station.

The booster station will consist of pumps that will pump water from the Detroit Water source to the elevated water tank. A contract has been awarded to Sorenson Gross Construction Company in the amount of $1.7 million.  The booster station will be located on the commercial property situated on the north east corner of the Five Mile Road – Sheldon Road intersection.

The water main system improvements contract has been awarded to Stante Excavating Company in the amount of $600,000 and includes constructing new water mains at the following locations:

  • 1,000 feet of 8-inch water main along Six Mile Road, between Sheldon Road and Meadow Crest North.
  • 400 feet of 12-inch water main between the Northville High School and the Woodlands North subdivision.
  • 700 feet of 12-inch water main along Six Mile Road, between Stonebrook Drive and Hilltop View Drive.
  • 1,650 feet of 12-inch water main along Six Mile Road, between Sherwood Land and a point approximately 700 feet east of Beck Road.
  • 3,200 feet of 16-inch water main along Five Mile Road and within Community Park between Beck Road and the Arcadia Ridge development.

SCHEDULE

Our anticipated project schedule and milestones are as follows:

  • Begin Construction: April 2007
  • Project Completion: June 2008

The Township is constructing a $500,000 water main project to replace approximately 2,000 feet of water main along Five Mile Road, between the Northville Forest Apartment complex and Tanger School. The existing main is cast iron and has chronic water main breaks, as recent as early 2006.

The construction contract was awarded to Rainbow Construction Company in April and work began in late May.  The contractor anticipates completion in early July.

Northville Township is in the preliminary design phase of a water main replacement project that will extend from the Fox Hollow Subdivision to Sheldon Road. This project is being financed entirely by the township and no individual property will be assessed.

Phase I of the project will extend from the Fox Hollow Subdivision (tying into an existing water main between lots 12 and 13) to Pickford Road where it will continue in the right of way to an end location in Fermanagh Court.  Phase I will consist of approximately 2,800 ft of 12” ductile iron pipe.

The purpose of the improvement project is to provide a replacement ductile iron water main for an old cast iron water main that runs cross country through lots from Fox Hollow to Sheldon Road.  The existing main is exposed in locations, and subject to future breaks due to its age.  This project will upgrade the pipe material, provide additional service opportunities, as well as place the water main in a location easily accessible for future maintenance.

Preliminary design has been completed and easement acquisition is underway.

SCHEDULE

No schedule has been determined for this project.

Northville Township has been requested by the Hills of Crestwood Homeowner Association to assist in the maintenance of their detention pond.  All homeowners in the association will receive a one time assessment for the management, engineering and construction cost associated with the project.  The assessment will be placed on the winter tax bill at project completion.

The $40,000 construction contract was awarded to Anglin Civil Constructors in April and work is underway.  It is anticipated that the construction will be completed by the end of June.
